Biographical Note for van der Smissen, Hillegonda (1848-1949) :

Born 30 June 1848, Friedrichstadt, Germany. Parents Carl Justus van der Smissen and Sarah Cornelia van der Smissen.

Moved to the United States with her parents in 1868, to Wadsworth, Ohio.

Moved with parents in 1878 to Hayesville, Ohio. Her father died in 1890 and in 1891 her mother moved to Summerfield, Illinois. She went with her mother to provide care. Her mother died in 1901.

Traveled to Germany in 1885 and again in 1930s(?).

Became supervisor of food service at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, Kansas, in 1909. Joined the deaconess sisterhood there.

Died 29 September 1949.
