Collection Historical Note

Esther (Steiner) Meyer was born in Allen County, Ohio on July 25, 1898. Esther was the second oldest child of Menno Simon and Clara Eby Steiner. She went on to graduate from Goshen College, attend Western Reserve University, and teach. In 1923, Esther married Jacob Conrad (J.C.) Meyer and they had three children: Albert J. Meyer, Margaret Meyer Irvin, and John W. Meyer. For most of her early years, she was an active member of the Oak Grove Mennonite Church in Smithville, Ohio. Upon moving to Goshen in the 1960s, she attended College Mennonite Church, and after her husband's death she joined Assembly Mennonite Church.

Esther was always deeply interested in peace and international relations issues. She was interested in the environment long before it became an issue of wider interest. She was involved in groups that discussed national and international issues in Cleveland, as well as Great Decisions groups and the American Association of University Women in Goshen.
