Scope and Contents of the Materials

These records consist of the formally published material produced before and after the biennial meetings of the Mennonite Church General Assembly.  These include programs, reports, proceedings, delegate workbooks, onsite newspapers, and other supplemental publications.  Reports and proceedings found in the Mennonite Church General Assembly publications provide an overview of the state of the Mennonite Church, including its finances, and the issues of most concern to its leaders.  Later General Assemblies also featured youth conventions.

Other materials in these records include the minutes and some working files of assembly planning committees.  These are not available for all years of the General Assembly.

The General Assemblies are designated by their location rather than their number.

Biographical Note

The General Assembly of the Mennonite Church was formed in 1971.   Following a church-wide reorganization study in the 1960s, the regional conferences of the Mennonite Church in the United States and Canada created the General Assembly.  The General Assembly met biennially and was composed of delegates from the participating Mennonite Church conferences.

The work of the Mennonite Church General Assembly was largely conducted by the General Board, a body consisting of an executive secretary, board and agency secretaries, and regional conference representatives.

The General Assembly was dissolved in 2002 with the merger of the Mennonite Church and the General Conference Mennonite Church.  The equivalent organization created in the newly formed Mennonite Church USA was designated the Delegate Assembly.
