Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection chronicles the early life of Elizabeth M. Yoder Woodiwiss (1889-1986), who homesteaded in North Dakota from 1907-1910. Her diaries (photocopies of originals) record her experiences as a homesteader, as well as a few years after she returned to Pennsylvania.  Articles about Elizabeth are also in the collection, alongside her own recollections. There are also photographs depicting her as a homesteader and later in life, as well as photographs of the homesteading community.

Biographical Note

Elizabeth M. Yoder (Woodiwiss) was born on July 5, 1889 in Bellevill, Pennsylvania until 1902, when her family moved to Surrey, North Dakota.  In 1907 she built her own homestead 60 miles away, on the open prairie. After three years of homesteading, she married Hugh Woodiwiss, who she lived with in Sawyer, North Dakota, until his death in 1944.  She then moved to Elkhart, where she lived for the remainder of her life.  Elizabeth Yoder Woodiwiss died on January 13, 1986.
