Name: Fast, Erna (1912-2008)

Historical Note:

Erna Fast was born December 13, 1912 in Mountain Lake, Minn.  After completing high school, in 1931 she taught in Minnesota.  She graduated Bethel College (North Newton, Kan.) in 1943 and from new York Biblical Seminary in 1946.  Fast had hoped to serve as a minister, but the Mennonite Church did not elect women minister at that time.

She worked for Mennonite Central Committee from 1948-1949, aiding Germans and  war refugees.  Upon her return to the United States, she recruited volunteers from Bethel College to assist German students.  Her work ultimately became an established Wupperthal - Bethel student exchange program.

Her professional life was devoted to Christian education in Presbyterian and Congregationalist churches.  She died in Hesston, Kansas in 2008.
