Name: Burkhard, Jacob (1873-1906)

Historical Note:

Jacob Burkhard was born in Stephenson County, Illinois on October 11, 1873.  He was baptized in Adams County, Nebraska, where he and his family lived, by Bishop Albrecht Schiffler in 1894.

His first ministry was that of Sunday school superintendent of a Sunday school held in the Antioch School House near Pauliae, Nebraska.  He married Mary M. Yoder of Champagne County, Illinois, in 1900, and both he and his wife were appointed foreign missionaries to India shortly thereafter.  He was ordained to the ministry by Bishop J. A. Ressler in 1901.

In India, he and his wife evangelized and organized an orphanage for Indian children who lost parents in the famine of 1900.

He died in India on September 29, 1906 of a carbuncle between the shoulder blades.  J. A. Ressler eulogized him as "a martyr to the cause of the India mission."
