Elsie L. Harms, 91, 3001 Ivy Drive, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 1996) at Newton Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 11, 1905, in Newton to Jacob B. Schmidt and Elizabeth Penner Schmidt. She married Valentine Harms on Oct. 25, 1928, at the Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater. He died Nov. 17, 1961.

She graduated from Newton High School, then attended Hillsboro Academy. She taught elementary school in the Harvey County School District, later she worked in the food service department at Bethel College. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of the Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater and the Kidron-Bethel Home Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, Edgar Harms of Newton; two daughters, Joan Unruh of Haysville and Esther J. Buller of Mountain Lake, Minn.; one brother, John F. Schmidt of North Newton; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers.

The funeral will be at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Whitewater with the Rev. James Voth of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Mennonite Cemetery in rural Whitewater.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p. m. Friday at Petersen's Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to Grace Hill Mennonite Church in care of the funeral home.
