Scope and Contents of the Materials

The papers contain a hodgepodge of information pertaining to Ruth and Rhoda Resslers' various stints in Japan as mission and relief workers.  Materials include correspondence, activity reports, the newsletter of the Hokkaido Mennonite Fellowship, miscellaneous materials relating to Mennonite mission work in Japan, and financial records.  The Resslers' papers also contain a number of photographs, scrapbooks, and a handful of slides.  Researchers should be aware, however, that many of the images are not labeled.  The collection holds a several audiocassettes as well: recorded lectures presented by the Resslers in Japan, an oral history interview with Rhoda and Ruth Ressler, and a multi-tape oral history with Rhoda Ressler.  Also included is an 1889 statement on dress and prayer coverings, unrelated to Mennonite mission work in Japan.

Biographical Note

Rhoda Ressler was born on June 7, 1910 near Smithville, Ohio.  Her family moved to Scottdale, Pennsylvania in 1911, where she was raised.  Her parents, Jacob and Lina Ressler, had served as missionaries in India.   She attended Goshen College, earning a BS in education, and the University of Pittsburg, earning a MS in deaf education.  She taught in Pittsburgh and Scottdale for many years and was an active member of her church.

Rhoda Ressler and her sister Ruth served with Mennonite Central Committe in Japan from 1949 to 1952.  They then served the Mennonite Board of Missions in Kamshihoro, Hokkaido (Japan), establishing the first Mennonite Mission kindergarten and the Kamshihoro Mennonite Church.  From 1966 to 1974 she continued to work for the Mennonite Mission Board as an English teacher in Japanese schools and universities in Osaka.

She retired from missionary service in 1974, returning to Ohio.  She died in 2010.
